Whatever Happened to the Walgreens/ Rite Aid Merger?
Back in October of 2015, Walgreens began their proposed buyout of competitor Rite Aid in a deal worth about $17 Billion.
Almost immediately all sorts of red flags were raised complaining about Anti-Trust violations as such a merger would have left just two major pharmacy chains in the US: Walgreens & CVS.
After two years of revisions, federal regulators have accepted Walgreens $4.4 Billion deal to buy 1,932 Rite Aid stores. Once the dust settles, that will leave Rite Aid with 2,600 stores.
The Rite Aid pharmacies that Walgreens plans to buy will eventually be rebranded as Walgreens stores
